President's Welcome Address - JYA/GES Inter JHS Quiz, 2013

District Director of Education, Board of Directors of Odotobri Rural Bank Ltd present, Honourable Assembly Members, Headteachers, Colleague Teachers, Contestants, Students, Ladies and Gentlemen you are all welcome to the 8th Annual Inter JHS quiz competition and second champion of champions quiz competition organised by Jacobu Youth Association in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service and sponsored by Odotobri Rural Bank Ltd.

In the year 2006 Jacobu Youth Association which was established 2004 thought it wise to organise this competition to JHS in Jacobu town namely Experimental DA, R/C, Methodist and SDA. During those times, the Association’s sources of income were proceeds from our annual dinner during which we appeal for funds from all and sundry with some financial support from the then DCE and our MP. In 2009 we invited Biribiwomang J.H.S to take part

As the years went by, we grew and in Last two years we invited Amansie Royals, Afoako JHS and Patasi D/A J.H.S. Last year we were able to capture 15 schools across the District in three zones:- Jacobu, Afoako and Fiankomah. The 15 schools were Afoako JHS, Biribiwomang D/A,  Patasi D/A, Homase D/A, Kobro D/A, Mile 9D/A, Akrofuom D/A, Fiankoma D/A, Abuakwaa D/A, Abuntunso D/A, Jacobu Methodist JHS, Jacobu SDA JHS, Jacobu, R/C JHS, Jacobu Experimental JHS and Amansie Royals. In the end, St. Peter’s R/C emerged winners and remains the most cupped school in this competition.

This very year, in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service, this quiz captures all the 36 public junior high schools in the entire District. We must commend the singular contribution of the Guidance and Counselling Coordinator at the G.E.S - Mad. Christian Bukari for seeing us through the first round of this competition in all 8 circuits/zones to bring us to the semi finals stage. We also acknowledge the strong support she received from her colleagues at the office particularly JYA’s former president and Assembly Member for Krofrom Elctoral Area, the Hon. Benedict Boadi – Basic School Coordinator at the GES.

Eventhough, we have been able to capture the whole district, only 9 schools qualified for the semi-finals which were grouped into two zones.

Zone1schools were: Jacobu R/C, Amansie Royals, Patasi D/A and Afoako D/A JHS. St. Peter’s R/C carried the day with Patasi running up. Zone 2 schools were NumeresoJHS, Adinkra JHS, Tweapease JHS, Mile 14 JHS and Hu/Akwansram J.H.S. Mile 14 emerged first with Adinkrah running up.

We are here today to witness the champions and runners- up of the two zones battle for the ultimate prize. They are Jacobu, R/C, Patasi D/A, Mile14 JHS and Adinkra JHS.

Our set questions are predominantly based on the approved syllabuses for first and second years. The subject areas remain English Language, Social Studies/Current Affairs, Integrated Science and Mathematics.

Prizes to be won by the schools include a certificate of participation, FIFA approved soccer ball each, two t- shirts each and the winning school also takes away a set of football jersey and a trophy. All travelling schools shall have their transport catered for by the Association. Let me appeal to the Board Committee in charge of scholarships to consider including today’s winners onto their helping list in the coming year.

Prizes for the participant include 10 exercise books& 2 pens, certificate of participation, mathematical set each, customised t- shirt each and school bag. The winners also take away Oxford Advance Learners Dictionary new 8th edition. To add to this, their B.E.C.E registration would also be borne by Jacobu Youth Association sponsored by Odotobri Rural Bank Ltd.

We therefore take this opportunity to thank Management and Board of Directors of Odotobri Rural Bank Ltd who for three years running has been the sole sponsor for this programme. We also thank the district directorate of the Ghana Education Service for helping us to cover the entire District and also setting a day aside for the competition from the very beginning. We cannot overlook the District Assembly, our Member of Parliament, Johnsonkwa Ent and High Auto Sounds for their individual contributions to this program us in previous years.

District Director of Education, Board of Directors of Odotobri Rural Bank Ltd present, Honourable Assembly Members, Headteachers, Colleague Teachers, Contestants, Students, Ladies and Gentlemen, it is our hope that a year or two our quiz will be captured live either on radio or on television . We therefore appeal to all and sundry to make this dream of ours a reality.

On behalf of Jacobu Youth Association, Odotobri Rural Bank Ltd, my own behalf I wish all contestant and their schools the very best of luck.

Signed

GORDON DENKYIRA

PRESIDENT

Our Symbols

In every human endeavour, signs and symbols aid a lot in communication. So in our Association, we have carefully chosen some signs and symbols to do most of the talking for us. We are Africans and we pride ourselves as being Ghanaian youth who have the interest of our community at heart. It isn't too clear if Members are conversant with the colours and symbols that represent us as one body. Let's see:

Our Name
During the mobilization period, the founders found out that ours is about the third time that Jacobu Youth Association has been born. Many fail to fully grasp the significance of our common name. To some, the name intimates that every youth in Jacobu is a member whether or not s/he is fully registered. Others think Members, especially the leaders, are only exploiting the name to their own selfish end and there are a countless others who would want nothing to do with the Association regardless of whatever name we may adopt. Let it be noted that Jacobu Youth Association is a more human-friendly than most organized institutions we find in town. It is an mother-name which encompasses all other youth groups, clubs, unions and organizations in town.
It is also common knowledge that this latest resurrection of the Association is by far the most promising and potentially powerful to reach high places. Our destiny is in our hands.

Our Logo
As Ashantis we chose our most recognized logo from the index of Adinkra symbols. These symbols are wealthy source of knowledge and wisdom for each individual pattern has its distinct meaning and cultural significance. The Jacobu Youth Association has adopted the symbol 'Ese Ne Tekrema' as our official logo. This represents friendship and collaboration. Our elders say, "Inasmuch as the teeth fight with the tongue, they still stay together. Hence our motto is 'Together We Build.' We rather choose unity over divisiveness irrespective of where it is coming from, be it political, religious or factional. To us the most important factor to consider is the advancement of the common land we all share - the land called Jacobu.

Our Colours
Colours have a powerful, though benign, influence on our lives. Our moods and disposition are almost always affected by the natural colours that surround us. For us as an Association, we choose to be identified by colours blue and white. Aside the affective influence they may have on us, each individual colour has its meaning that it communicates to those who understand the language of colours.
Blue:
Blue is the overwhelming "favorite color." Blue is seen as trustworthy, dependable, and committed.
The color of ocean and sky, blue is perceived as a constant in our lives. As the collective color of the spirit, it invokes rest and can cause the body to produce chemicals that are calming. However, not all blues are serene and sedate.
Electric or brilliant blues become dynamic and dramatic -- an engaging color that expresses exhilaration. Some shades or the overuse of blue may come across as cold or uncaring.

Indigo, a deeper blue, symbolizes a mystical borderland of wisdom, self-mastery, and spiritual realization. While blue is the color of communication with others, indigo turns the blue inward to increase personal thought, profound insights, and instant understandings.

Blue is the least "gender specific" color, having equal appeal to both men and women.

Blue is the only color which maintains its own character in all its tones...it will always stay blue; whereas yellow is blackened in its shades, and fades away when lightened; red when darkened becomes brown, and diluted with white is no longer red, but another color – pink.

White:

White is associated with light, goodness, innocence, purity, and virginity. It is considered to be the color of perfection.
White means safety, purity, and cleanliness. As opposed to black, white usually has a positive connotation. White can represent a successful beginning. In heraldry, white depicts faith and purity.
In advertising, white is associated with coolness and cleanliness because it's the color of snow. You can use white to suggest simplicity in high-tech products. White is an appropriate color for charitable organizations; angels are usually imagined wearing white clothes. White is associated with hospitals, doctors, and sterility, so you can use white to suggest safety when promoting medical products. White is often associated with low weight, low-fat food, and dairy products.

Our Motto
Together We Build is more than just a motto. It is a philosophical catch-phrase that succinctly sums up our vision and mission as a modern-day youth group.

The keyword, together, really means one for all, all for one togetherness. It connotes unity that permeates borders and boundaries. Simply put, our Association looks beyond political, religious, factional, partisan, social standing, wealth, sex, creed, clan, educational and financial fragmentations. We welcome every individual who commits to the success of our movement. Our march is heading to the apex of the hill on which our city sits.

As a 21st century youth network, the onus is upon us to undo the comeuppances from the past, and create better foundation for the future. It all begins and ends with humans. It is better we build these structures together as one people. It is also faster, easier and more convenient to be in unison than at loggerheads with our own extended selves.

God be for us all.

MEETINGS

Per the Constitution, we are to hold compulsory meetings two times in the year during which Financial Statement is read to Members. Other meetings are held in times of emergency and need. This accords the Executive freedom to call meetings in the interest of the Association.

For the past four years, we have been holding our meetings at the District Assembly Hall, Jacobu.

Normally General Meetings (GMs) are held on Sundays after church service.

The Executive plans carefully to ensure that our meetings last about three hours. So if we all abide by rules prevailing in the house, GMs that start at 2pm and end at 6pm.

SMS is sent to all Members at least five days before the day scheduled for the meeting. A typical notice would like this:

GENERAL MEETING
The Jacobu Youth Association invites you to a general meeting scheduled as follow

AGENDA
DATE: Sunday, ....................
VENUE: District Assembly Hall

All meetings are chaired by the President, and in his/her absence, the Vice President. The Secretary reads the previous unread minutes and upon acceptance, the house agrees the meeting proceeds. The President reads the agenda for the day after which members are allowed to contribute as and when the topic is put to the floor.

Next time you receive a message from us, do not hesitate to attend our meetings. We need you more even as you need us. We believe our collective effort would put this network of friendship seated in high places.

Give us a call for further clarification(s) or leave a message on this blog in the space called comments.
